When the last rankings were released over winter break, UMBC had fallen from #2 to #3 and just one vote ahead of #4 Miami. Heading into the final weekend of the fourth ranking period UMBC hopes to finalize its case to remain #3. The last order of business in making that case lies in a Saturday night contest against the University of Delaware from Fred Rust Arena in Newark, DE.
UMBC and Delaware faced off one prior time this year, a 10-4 win for the Retrievers that didnt come easy. UMBC trailed 1-0 just 3 minutes into the game, and were down by a score of 3-1 after the first period. UMBC tied it up in the 2nd period just to fall behind again at 4-3; then scored seven unanswered goals to end the game at 10-4. Jon Drago (Guttenberg, NJ) got the win in net in relief of starter Brian Mersman (Grand Rapids, MI). Justin Stewart (Philadelphia, PA), Erik Becker (Crofton, MD) and Taylor Morgan (Sewell, NJ) each scored twice in the win and Stewart, Becker and Sean O'Connor (Stony Point, NY) had five points each.
Delaware is currently 5-10-0-2 with a 3-5-0-2 record in the MACH-North division. Delaware will realign to the MACH-South division next season.
The game is currently schedule to be broadcast LIVE on HerbFM with CHris Heidel on the call.
